Blue Jays beat Cardinals in dramatic opener!!
ST. Louis: Whether or not it was opening day, that was a lot. Thirty-four hits and 19 runs. fourteen pitchers in total. a steady flow of leverage in the final game. despite the pitch clock, a game that lasted three hours and 38 minutes, not including Adam Wainwright's unexpected two-plus-minute rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner before the festivities began.
Also, star power versus star power at the end. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. first stemmed a St. Louis Cardinals rally in the seventh inning with a splendid cut of a Tommy Edman chopper prior to making a cockeyed toss home to save a run, then, at that point, warded off 102.9 m.p.h. Jordan Hicks heat for a two-run single that put the Toronto Blue Jays up 8-7 in the eighth. After that, a walk by Lars Nootbar, a double by Paul Goldschmidt, and a two-run double by Nolan Arenado off Yimi Garcia in the bottom half gave the defending National League Central champions a 9-8 lead.
As he walked Whit Merrifield in the first inning, Kevin Kiermaier followed with a base hit, George Springer smacked an RBI single into shallow left, and Guerrero hit the game-winning sac fly, neither Ryan Helsley, the other fire-breathing dragon in the Cardinals bullpen, nor Guerrero were able to maintain that lead.
Finally, the Blue Jays' eighth pitcher of the day, Jordan Romano, ended the madness with a crazy 10-9 season-opening victory at Busch Stadium in front of 47,649 happy fans.
All-star pitchers Alek Manoah and Miles Mikolas' rough outings, in which each pitched just 3.1 innings and allowed five earned runs, were easily forgotten due to the depth of the drama at the conclusion.
There was a lot to take in between, from Manoah discovering his velocity while still taking damage to the defensive upgrades immediately paying off and clever baserunning deciding the outcome.
