-Address by US Vice President Joe Biden to Canada's Parliament
The United States has chosen to link our future with Canada's because we know there is no better partner, ally, or friend.
And today, I want to assure all Canadians that the United States will always be there for them.
During his first trip to Ottawa since taking office in 2021, U.S. President Joe Biden addressed Canadian lawmakers in the House of Commons on Friday.
On the bonds that bind, as well as hockey rivalries
Hockey rivalries and the ties that bind: "No two nations on Earth are bound by such close ties, friendship, family, commerce, and culture." Our labor unions are international. So do our games associations. Baseball, ball, hockey … I need to say, I enjoyed your groups with the exception of the Leafs … I explain to you why. They beat the (Philadelphia) Flyers back in January. Exactly why. And I would be sleeping alone if I didn't say that I married a Philadelphia girl. Fellows, I don't really like you that much.
On getting along better
"We have been a stronghold of liberty, safeguard for the fundamental freedoms that literally give our lives meaning. In war and in peace, we have been a stronghold of liberty." We have gladly assumed the role of global leader because we are aware of the dangers faced by Americans and Canadians alike when freedom is threatened anywhere in the world. Our futures are connected today. And they can't be apart. Because it's a choice, not because geography will always be there. a decision we have repeatedly made. We are confident that we won't find a better partner, which is why the United States has decided to link our future with Canada. From the bottom of my heart, I mean this: no longer a steady partner or friend. What's more, today, I share with you, and to every one individuals of Canada, that you will constantly, forever have the option to depend on the US of America."
Regarding the Future
Looking to the future: "We built a partnership together that is an incredible advantage for both our countries." That doesn't mean we never deviate, as any two nations will do occasionally. Because we both recognize that our fundamental interests are aligned, even when we disagree, we resolve our disagreements in goodwill and friendship. We are at a turning point in history, where the choices we make in the coming years will shape our world for decades to come. We've reached the point where it occurs every five or six generations. Nothing gives me more confidence in the future than the knowledge that the United States and the candidate remain united.
On interconnected economies
“The Inflation Reduction Act... represents the single largest commitment in tackling climate change in our history—in fact, the single largest investment in all of human history,” according to interconnected economies. Additionally, it will encourage investments in clean energy all over the world. In addition, tax credits for electric vehicles built in Canada are explicitly included, recognizing the interconnectedness of our auto industries and workers. The most pro-union president the United States has ever had is me. I talk to a lot of members of Canadian unions. Look, this is a good example of how we can work together in the future. Both of our countries are investing domestically to strengthen our industrial bases, ensuring that North American goods are not only made, but also the best in the world. We are going to expand our economies at the same time as we intensify our shared commitment to climate action.
Security on a global scale
Security on the continent "We are also a nation in the Arctic." Both of us are aware of the significant significance of this region to our collective security and the sudden interest of other nations in the Arctic. To manage and safeguard our planet's northernmost regions, we collaborate closely. Additionally, as American nations, we have a strong interest in preserving democracy, peace, prosperity, and security in the Western Hemisphere. This begins with our determination to safeguard our people and our sovereign land. Norad is the only binational military command in the world. It is an incredible representation of the faith we have in one another and the trust we placed in each other's capabilities. This is yet another way that our partnership is exceptional.
Regarding diversity
Concerning diversity, "Our strength is the incredible diversity that defines each of our nations." Prime Minister Trudeau and I both built administrations that resemble America and Canada, and I am aware that this is a belief that we share. I'm extremely glad that the two of us have cupboards that are 50% ladies, without precedent for history. Guys, even you don't agree, so I'd get up. We learned your lesson. Because at the end of the day: We build a better future for all of our people by making it easier for historically underrepresented and underserved communities to dream, create, and succeed.
Going to the Moon
Regarding the mission to the moon, "In just a few days, NASA is going to announce an international team of astronauts who will crew the Artemis II mission." Three Americans and one Canadian will make the first human mission to the moon since the Apollo 11 mission ended more than 50 years ago. We decide to go back to the moon together, and we go back there together. We then look ahead to Mars and the endless possibilities that lie beyond from there. Our children watching that flight here on Earth will also learn the names of those new pioneers. They will be the ones who will lead us into the future we hope to create."
